A disease of the small intestines due to a sensitivity to foods with gluten, resulting in damage to the small intestines. Such an ailment is usually predisposed and develops from middle infancy onward. Symptoms include pale, loose, and greasy stool, weight loss or failure to gain weight. The persistence of diarrhea due to Celiac Disease restricts the amount of nutrients absorbed from foods. Celiac disease is genetic, and can be diagnosed through blood work, and biopsy of the duodenum. Treatments are fairly simple, such as a change in diet to restrict gluten intake.
